ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a native of New York City, an artist and a dancer with a passion for process. My work investigates the opposing forces of partner dancing: surface vs. subsurface, public vs. private and leader vs. follower. As an Argentine tango dancer, I receive the majority of directives from my dance partner through pressure on my skin. Words are replaced with silent signals of touch as my partner and I stretch our bodies' skins in time and space.

Fascinated with the corporeal body, I am especially interested in human skin. It is the body's largest erotic organ, and an endless threshold for non-verbal communication. An impervious yet permeable barrier, scientifically speaking our skin allows us to sense only pressure, temperature and pain. But in the dance, through our skin, we communicate so much more

As a visual artist in my studio, I continue to utilize my own sense of touch and intuitiveness in my creative process. By rubbing, scraping, layering, tearing, drawing, burnishing, folding and sculpting, I, once again, embrace a physical process. This time, the result can be viewed on paper and Mylar as fragmented figuration and skin like topographies. Each composition takes me back to a memory of dance buried beneath my skin waiting to be unleashed.

I often complete the process by performing live tango for the audience. My ability to connect with my partners and my audience is an endless challenge and demands that my voice be unique and strong.
